Switched at Birth is a heartfelt family drama about two teenage girls who discover they were accidentally switched at the hospital and raised by different families.
The ABC Family series, which ran from 2011 to 2017, explores identity, culture and belonging through the lives of Bay Kennish and Daphne Vasquez, played by Vanessa Marano and Katie Leclerc, respectively, alongside memorable performances from Lea Thompson and the rest of the ensemble cast.
Over five seasons, the show earned praise for its authentic portrayal of the Deaf community and its meaningful storytelling. As the series celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, let’s take a look at where the cast is now.

Vanessa Marano played Bay Kennish, the artistic and headstrong teen who learns she was switched at birth and raised in the wrong family. Bay’s journey centers on identity, family loyalty, and finding her voice as an artist.
Before the show, Marano appeared in series, like Gilmore Girls and Grey’s Anatomy, and she later starred in and co-produced the film Saving Zoë alongside her sister, Laura.
Since Switched at Birth, the 33-year-old has continued working steadily in television and films, like One Delicious Christmas. Marano keeps her personal life fairly private.

Lea Thompson as Kathryn Kennish

Lea Thompson portrayed Kathryn Kennish, Bay’s loving and sometimes overwhelmed mother who works to reconnect with the daughter she didn’t raise. Kathryn evolves from a stay-at-home mom into a published author during the series.
Thompson was already a household name thanks to films, like Back to the Future, and the sitcom Caroline in the City. In recent years, she has also worked behind the camera, directing episodes of TV.
The 64-year-old has been married to director Howard Deutch since 1989, and they share two daughters, including actress Zoey Deutch.

D.W. Moffett played John Kennish, the former professional baseball player and devoted father trying to hold his family together after the life-changing discovery.
The 71-year-old has appeared in numerous films and TV shows over the years, including A Song from the Heart and For Your Love.
Moffett has been married to Kristal Rogers since 1997 but often keeps his personal life out of the spotlight.

Lucas Grabeel as Toby Kennish

Lucas Grabeel brought heart and humor to the role of Toby Kennish, Bay’s older brother who pursues his passion for music while supporting his family.
Grabeel first became widely known as Ryan Evans in Disney’s High School Musical films and Ethan Dalloway in the Halloweentown franchise. He has also done voice work for animated series, such as Elena of Avalor, and continues to act and create music.
According to his social media, the 41-year-old is dating writer and producer, Rihamel Ounsi.

Katie Leclerc as Daphne Paloma Vasquez

Katie Leclerc played Daphne Vasquez, the confident and determined teen who grew up in a working-class household and is deaf. Daphne’s journey explores independence, romance, and career ambition, especially in the medical field.
Before Switched at Birth, Leclerc made her debut on the series Veronica Mars and has since become a familiar face in Hallmark and Lifetime movies, especially holiday films.
The 39-year-old actress was previously married to Brian Habecost for three years but the pair later divorced in 2017.

Constance Marie as Regina Vasquez

Constance Marie portrayed Regina Vasquez, Daphne’s fiercely protective and hardworking mother. She is also widely recognized for playing Angie Lopez on the sitcom George Lopez and for her role in the film Selena.
The 60-year-old actress was in a long-term relationship with Kent Katich, and they share a daughter together. Though they later separated, she has remained open about motherhood being her greatest joy.

Ivonne Coll played Adriana, Regina’s mother and Daphne’s grandmother, bringing warmth, humor and tradition to the Vasquez family.
The 78-year-old has had a long and impressive career in television, film and theater, and is well known for her roles as Alba Villanueva on Jane the Virgin. She began her career in Puerto Rico before transitioning to acting in the United States.

Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe

Sean Berdy played Emmett, Daphne’s close friend and later love interest, who is proudly rooted in Deaf culture. Emmett is artistic, loyal and often torn between relationships and independence. Berdy, who is deaf in real life, brought authenticity to the role and became a fan favorite.
The 32-year-old previously appeared in The Sandlot 2 and later starred in the Netflix series The Society. Berdy has also been open about advocating for Deaf representation in entertainment.

Marlee Matlin as Melody Bledsoe

Marlee Matlin portrayed Melody, Emmett’s protective and strong-willed mother. Melody is deeply involved in the Deaf community and often serves as a mentor figure.
Matlin made history as the first Deaf actor to win an Academy Award for her role in Children of a Lesser God. The 60-year-old has continued acting in both television, notably The West Wing, and film while also advocating for accessibility and inclusion.
She has been married to Kevin Grandalski since 1993, and they have four children together.
