As a member of the U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT), Tim Weah is currently playing in the 2026 World Cup — but he isn't the only soccer star in his family.
Tim's dad is George Weah, who was one of the most famous soccer players in the world in the '90s. He was honored with both the FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d'Or in 1995. However, Tim has been charting his own path.
"He proved himself," George told NBC News in May 2026, referring to his son's career on the soccer field. "He did not just earn it because one of his parents played. He worked so hard. He fought very hard."
After meeting in 1991, George and his wife, businesswoman Clar Weah, welcomed son George Jr. and daughter Martha, followed by their younger son, Tim, in 2000. George stayed a famous figure even after he left the soccer field, eventually becoming the 25th president of Liberia, with Clar serving as first lady.

George was 21 when manager Arsène Wenger saw him playing for a team in Cameroon and brought him to Europe. He would go on to become a soccer star, playing for AS Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Chelsea, Manchester City and Olympique Marseille, per the BBC.
In 1995, George won both the FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d'Or, an honor bestowed on the best soccer player in Europe. George is still the only player born in Africa to receive the latter.
"Growing up, you have the pictures all over the house and his jersey, so you kind of have an idea of what his career was like,” Timothy said on My New Favorite Futbolista, per NBC4 New York. “We went to the World Cup in South Africa and just seeing his interaction with people and fans, you kind of pick up on, 'Okay, he was pretty much a big deal.' "

According to The Executive Mansion, Clar was born in Kingston, Jamaica. She was the youngest of seven children, and at 13, she immigrated with her family to the U.S.
She has a nursing license, and graduated from City University of New York with a Bachelor of Science in health promotion management. Per a November 2022 profile of Tim in The Athletic, Clar and her older brother, Michael Duncan, co-own a buffet-style restaurant called the Jamaica Breeze, in the Rosedale neighborhood of Queens, N.Y.

"After I did his bank account, he asked me [if he] can keep in contact with me, because he's in Europe and the time difference, if he can call me to check on his accounts," Clar recalled in the interview. "I told him yes and he ended up calling me like midnight my time in New York, and we started having a friendship on the phone."
She continued, saying, "After that I went over to Europe to visit him, we visited Jamaica together, and that's how it started."

George was an international soccer sensation, but Tim says it was Clar who was his first soccer coach. “My mom was my first coach,” Tim told the USMNT in a November 2022 video. "Mom Dukes was definitely the one that started everything for me."
Clar's older brother, Michael, also gave his sister "a whole lot of credit" for supporting Tim's soccer talent.
"She really dedicated her time to Timothy. Seventy-five percent of where he's arrived is down to Timothy's skill and dedication, but the other 25 percent to get him over the hump, it's his mom," Michael told The Athletic in November 2022. "His father, here and there, but he was busy, playing and then with his work. When he was here, he'd be giving Timothy directives and so on, but his mother did the lion's share of the work."
After his soccer career, George served as president of Liberia

He ran for president of Liberia in 2005, but lost. He ran as a vice-presidential candidate in 2011, but lost again, per Reuters. In 2014, he was elected to Liberia's Senate.
In 2017, George ran for president and won, becoming the 25th president of Liberia. He would serve one six-year term, during which Clar also served as first lady. "I have spent many years of my life in stadiums, but today is a feeling like no other," he said during his inauguration speech, per the BBC.
In 2023, George ran for re-election, but lost. He left office in January 2024, according to CNN.
