Cathie Wood bought CRWV during a 23% weekly selloff, citing its $104 billion backlog and 112% revenue growth as proof AI demand remains early.
Goldman Sachs upgraded CRWV to Buy while NVDA, CoreWeave's second-largest shareholder, says its financing costs are falling.
CoreWeave's $52 billion debt and negative $6 billion quarterly free cash flow drove its bonds into distressed territory, with default insurance hitting record costs.

ARK Invest's Cathie Wood bought into last week's AI selloff. In Seoul on October 16, 2026, she said market fear is itself a sign that AI has room to run. "I'm talking about fear that AI, we're in a hype cycle. We do not believe we are, but the fact people are afraid means we are not in a bubble," Wood told Bloomberg, as reported by Briefs. She added: "While some people might say we're in the first inning, we would say we're still in the parking lot before we entered the baseball game."
The stock that tests her view is CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV). Briefs reports that ARK added it, along with Cerebras Systems, while prices fell. Briefs also says CoreWeave shares dropped 20% over three sessions before bouncing. The stock is down 23.44% over the past week and 55.67% over the past year. Our October 16 coverage tracked ARK's two straight days of CoreWeave buying.

Wood's Bull Case Has Numbers Behind It
CoreWeave posted second-quarter revenue of $2.575 billion, up 112.3% from a year earlier. Its contracted backlog stands near $104 billion, and customers added more than $25 billion of new commitments early in the third quarter. In July, management raised prices by about 25% across its chip products. CEO Michael Intrator said, "We expect demand to exceed supply for years meaningfully." Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) upgraded the stock to Buy on Monday, according to Barron's.

On the debt, Wood pointed to Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN): "Coinbase has evolved into a very strong, robust company and anyone who bought back then has been rewarded handsomely. This happens very often with young companies." She also warned that today's high memory chip prices are unlikely to last. That warning matters for any business buying hardware at today's prices.
Why Lenders Are Pricing Real Default Risk
Briefs reports that CoreWeave's bonds fell into distressed territory and that its credit risk gauge hit a record. A bond is "distressed" when it trades far below face value. Buyers demand that steep discount because they doubt they will be repaid in full. The credit risk gauge is the price of credit default swaps, which work like insurance against a borrower missing payments. A record reading means protecting yourself against a CoreWeave default has never cost more.
The filings show why lenders are nervous. CoreWeave carried $51.608 billion in total debt at June 30, which includes $16.54 billion of lease obligations. Total liabilities totaled $72.046 billion, compared with shareholder equity of $5.024 billion. Second-quarter interest expense reached $640 million, up from $267 million a year earlier. That interest bill was larger than the $626 million net loss.
The company spent $6.42 billion on capital projects in the quarter, while operations brought in $679 million of cash. That left free cash flow at -$5.74 billion. New financing of $10.071 billion covered the gap. Management guided full-year capital spending to $35 to $39 billion, so CoreWeave has to keep borrowing at whatever rate lenders now ask.
The Coinbase comparison has a weak spot. Coinbase runs an exchange that needs little physical capital. CoreWeave has to build data centers before its contracts start paying. The chief executive of NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) said CoreWeave's financing costs are falling, Briefs reports. Briefs also names Nvidia as CoreWeave's second-largest shareholder.
Verdict for Retirement-Minded Investors
Wood may be right that AI demand is early. Even so, CoreWeave is a speculative, high-debt stock. Its debt-to-equity ratio is 8.94, its equity holders get paid after bondholders and landlords, and its market value is about $28.88 billion. You can profit from a mania, but only with an exit plan, which is exactly what our free bubble survivor's handbook walks through. Conservative investors who share Wood's view on AI can study lower-debt companies that would hold up if the expansion slows.
One trigger to watch: the third-quarter report. Management guided interest expense to $860 to $940 million and adjusted operating income to $200 to $260 million. If operating profit starts closing that gap, Wood's case gets stronger. If the gap grows, the bond market's warning deserves more weight than her optimism.
