Warner Bros. Discovery has reportedly stopped production on a planned Harry Potter spin-off because they are focusing on the upcoming reboot. The paused spin-off was planned as a prequel series about the Marauders, a group of four close Gryffindor friends at Hogwarts in the 1970s.
The new reboot project had already built a full writers' room, prepared a detailed series guide, and completed three full scripts before the production was halted. WBD CEO David Zaslav ended the spin-off to shift their focus and resources toward the main Harry Potter TV reboot on HBO, which will readapt all seven original books across a decade-long series.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed in 2021 that several Harry Potter spin-offs were developed for the new streaming platform, but insiders later confirmed that one of them was about the Marauders. The name was chosen by Harry's father, James Potter, and his friends Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, and Remus Lupin.
The sequel would have shown the Marauders' time at Hogwarts in the 1970s, how they created the Marauder's Map and how they learned to become Animagi. Instead, the story could have shown them as adults and revealed how they resisted Lord Voldemort before Pettigrew betrayed the Potters.

Why have the Marauders been stopped?
Warner Bros. Discovery paused production on The Marauders and planned to move forward with the main Harry Potter franchise. According to Collider, the production is currently facing serious challenges with the writers and producers that they must solve before the spin-off can be made.

Like most prequels, the spin-off would need suspense and narrative tension even though the audience already knows the ending. One common way prequels create suspense is by going far back in the timeline to explore incidents with unanswered mysteries, for example, the Fantastic Beasts films focusing on Grindelwald.
This approach is harder for the spin-off because the stories about the Marauders are already explained clearly in the main series. Some fans may still enjoy watching the details more closely, but the show would still need prolonged tension to keep viewers engaged.
Another challenge the production is facing now is romance, which will inevitably upset some fans. Online discussions and fan fiction narratives about the spin-off often focus on romantic couples, especially Sirius and Remus, and therefore the show would either need to carefully tease this relationship without confirming it or adopt a hardline approach. Either choice would leave many fans disappointed.

The TV show is expected to explore moments and characters that were only mentioned in Rowling's books, and therefore HBO's reboot may revisit some of these ideas. Time will show whether audiences get to see more of Wormtail, Moony, Prongs and Padfoot.
Earlier, Deadline revealed that WBD disclosed the name, first trailer, and release window for its anticipated new Harry Potter series. The series will release worldwide at Christmas this year.
