Val Kilmer is back in the headlines more than a year after his death.
The late actor’s upcoming film As Deep as the Grave is attracting attention as his first posthumous movie, and because filmmakers used AI technology to recreate his voice for the role. But while fans revisit Kilmer’s remarkable career, his highest-rated movie may come as a surprise.
It’s not Top Gun, Tombstone, The Doors, or even Heat.
Instead, according to Rotten Tomatoes, Kilmer’s highest-rated film is a little-seen 1989 thriller that many movie fans may have completely missed: Kill Me Again.
The movie holds a perfect 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, though that score is based on a relatively small number of reviews.
The Film Also Changed Val Kilmer’s Life
Kill Me Again stars Kilmer as Jack Andrews, a down-on-his-luck private investigator who gets pulled into an increasingly dangerous scheme by a mysterious woman named Fay Forrester, played by Joanne Whalley.

Kill Me Again ended up becoming more significant to Kilmer than audiences could have known at the time.
The movie was where he met Whalley, who played his love interest. The two later married in 1988 and went on to have two children together, Mercedes and Jack Kilmer.
The marriage lasted until 1996.
According to Collider, the movie was never a major commercial success and largely flew under the radar compared to some of the bigger films Kilmer would make in the years that followed.
Still, it has earned an impressive reputation among those who have discovered it.
