Prime Video's LOTR: The Rings of Power series might have gotten mixed reviews. However, the show has proven how expanding an already beloved fantasy universe is something the fans will always appreciate. The series has avoided what HBO's Harry Potter reboot is straight up walking into by remaking a beloved fantasy story, which already has a successful adaptation.

While Peter Jackson'sThe Lord of the Rings trilogy brought Tolkien's fantasy land to our screens, it is still considered one of the best book-to-screen adaptations. Therefore, Prime Video's The Rings of Power, by telling a different story set in Middle-earth, has made its own place in the hearts of Tolkien fans. While there are debates about how the show approaches certain aspects of the LOTR story, it is still an expansion that gives fans more book lore on screen.

This is one of the major mistakes that HBO's Harry Potter might be making.

More on this in our story.

The Rings of Power avoids the remake mistake that HBO's Harry Potter is walking into

Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power explores the story of the rise of Sauron. It is set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy. It covers Middle-earth's Second Age and the forging of the Rings of Power by Sauron.

Season 3 of the series, which is set to premiere in November 2026, will feature the events surrounding Sauron's forging of the One Ring and also introduce several other locations and characters that we are familiar with. While the show received mixed reviews for how it handles many aspects of the Tolkien story and characters, it is still considered a show worth watching, as it expanded the fan-favorite universe.

The choice not to remake The Lord of the Rings into a series helped the Prime Video series, which the HBO reboot might struggle with. The Harry Potter film franchise is as successful as Peter Jackson's trilogy. Therefore, bringing the same story might also invite criticism, as comparisons will be made between the show and the films.

While the series is reported to stay true to the books and will feature several subplots that the movies couldn't include, it might still affect how the audience perceives the reboot series. Furthermore, it has recently been reported that Warner Bros. dropped The Marauders spin-off, which would have expanded the magic world, to work on the Harry Potter reboot series.

The Marauders series was one of the highly anticipated Harry Potter spin-offs, which would have worked well. Therefore, WBD's decision to shelve the series and pick up a Harry Potter reboot might be one of the riskiest moves. Moreover, the series is said to adapt all seven books into one Season each, which might also bring more issues with casting, a problem the series has already faced once, even before premiering.

Harry Potter Season 1 will premiere on December 25, 2026, on HBO, while The Rings of Power Season 3 will premiere on November 11, 2026, on Prime Video.
