Cary Elwes is remembering Rob Reiner on the filmmaker's first birthday since his death.

Elwes, who worked with the *When Harry Met Sally* director on 1987's *The Princess Bride*, shared a photo of himself with Reiner on Instagram on Friday.

"Today would have been your 79th birthday," he wrote. "Still hard to believe you’re gone. Missing you so much."

Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Dec. 14. Their son, Nick, was arrested in the Exposition Park neighborhood hours later and subsequently taken into custody the next day in connection to their deaths. He was formally charged with two counts of murder on Dec. 16. He also faces the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, as well as a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife.

Nick pleaded not guilty to the charges on Feb. 23. A preliminary hearing will be held on April 29, where a judge will determine if the prosecution has obtained enough evidence to proceed to trial. If convicted, Nick could face life in state prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty, though prosecutors have yet to decide whether to seek the death penalty.

Elwes previously paid tribute to Rob and Michele in an Instagram post shortly after their deaths, writing that he "fell in love" with the *This Is Spinal Tap* filmmaker when they first met for *The Princess Bride*. "I was already a fan of his work so meeting him in person was a dream come true," he wrote. "As we began spending more time together I knew this was someone I wanted in my life. I also knew that by casting me as Westley he was giving me the keys to the castle."

The *Saw* star said that he immediately appreciated Rob's tenderness. "The first thing I noticed about Rob was that he wore his heart on his sleeve," he wrote. "This was a man who felt deeply. Whose heart was filled with love and compassion. He wasn’t impressed by how much money you had or if you had a privileged upbringing. He just wanted to know if you were a 'good guy.' He always tried to find the best in people."

Elwes went on to describe his memories of their time shooting the romantic fantasy adventure film together. "I can’t remember a single day without laughter," he said. "The movie is about love, loyalty and sacrifice. Things that Rob held dear. Which is among the many reasons he was the perfect person to direct it."

Elwes — who later worked with the director on his 2015 film *Being Charlie*, which was inspired by Nick's struggles with addiction — also shared his admiration for Michele. "Besides being a gifted photographer she was an incredibly loving, intelligent person," he wrote. "Deeply passionate about her family and about lifting others up. To say that they were a great team would be an understatement. Their only interest in fame was that it allowed them to shine a light on causes they believed in, especially helping those who were marginalized."

The *Robin Hood: Men in Tights* star concluded, "Thank you Rob and Michele for sharing your life and art with us. Because my heart still aches every time I think of you, I know the grief of losing you too soon will likely never go away. Sure, death cannot stop true love but life is pain without you."
