- Taylor Sheridan was “set up to retire” after *Yellowstone *ended, but he decided to purchase the historic Four Sixes Ranch in Texas.
- The 260,000-acre property cost around $330 million, which meant Sheridan was “not going to be quitting my day job for a while.”
- Sheridan recently confirmed that his *Yellowstone* spin-off inspired by the ranch, *6666,* would never get made.
Taylor Sheridan couldn’t hang up his hat after *Yellowstone*.
Although he considered retiring after the series ended in 2024, Sheridan confessed that he couldn’t quit the business because he had made a major purchase.
“I was set up to retire,” the showrunner detailed on Tuesday’s *Rodeo Time* podcast. “I was going to be done after *Yellowstone*. I’d bought the ranch in Weatherford, [Texas], and I paid cash. I didn’t owe anybody anything.”

But the Oscar nominee had his eye on another pricey piece of property, the historic Four Sixes Ranch in Guthrie, Texas. Before purchasing the $330 million homestead, Sheridan considered whether it would be worth the investment.
“I was going to put my feet up and show horses and have my little hobby herd over here, and that was it,” he continued. “I knew that if I bought this ranch, I was not going to be quitting my day job for a while.”
His family played a major role in his decision, as he wanted to ensure the property would be maintained for generations. Established in 1900, Four Sixes Ranch — which had been run by the Burnett family for over 150 years — has become famous for its cattle and horses.

Taylor Sheridan in ‘Yellowstone’.
“My son was young, and I sat down [and] I said, ‘You’re too young for this conversation, but we’re going to have to have it anyway,’” he recalled. “Because if I buy this ranch someday, you’re going to have to run it. So, if you tell me you don’t want to do that, I’m not going to buy it.”
His son Gus, whom he shares with wife Nicole Muirbrook, agreed to take over the family business in the future. With that confirmation, Sheridan went ahead with the purchase.

And the 260,000-acre ranch has been a source of inspiration for the *Hell or High Water* writer, who previously planned a *Yellowstone *spin-off based on its history. While Paramount greenlit the show in 2021, he told the *Rodeo Time* podcast that the project is dead.
“There’s never going to be one; I would never fictionalize that ranch,” Sheridan shared. “People thought that that was going to be a thing, but I would never do that.”
