Sami Zayn has once again become part of the heated rivalry between Kevin Owens and CM Punk. During the August 21 episode of WWE SmackDown, Zayn’s actions played a major role in Owens losing his chance to win the Undisputed WWE Championship, allowing Punk to keep the title.

The match between Punk and Owens had been building for several weeks. After returning to WWE at SummerSlam, Owens earned a shot at the championship, setting up a big match between two veterans with a lot of history.

The tension was clear from the beginning of the match. Punk and Owens got into each other’s faces even before the official introductions started.

Owens attacked the WWE Champion as soon as the bell rang. He spent the early part of the match beating down his opponent around ringside before things settled into a back-and-forth fight.

The turning point came late in the match when CM Punk shoved Owens into the referee. The official went down. Owens then hit Punk with a Stunner, but there was no referee available to count the pin. Punk later hit Owens with a GTS and attempted to pin, but the referee was still down.

That was when Sami Zayn suddenly showed up.

He attacked Punk and sent him into the ring post before throwing him back into the ring.

Owens did not seem to know that Zayn had gotten involved. He hit Punk with another Stunner and looked ready to finally win the championship. Zayn grabbed the referee and threw him into the ring forcefully to make the count, but Punk kicked out.

But Zayn was not finished. He threw the WWE Championship into the ring and told Owens to use the belt against Punk. Meanwhile, the referee was still recovering on the apron.

Owens refused the former WWE Champion’s offer. That decision quickly backfired.

Zayn grabbed the championship himself and smashed Owens in the face with it. Punk immediately took advantage of the situation. He hit Owens with the GTS and pinned him after the referee returned to the ring.

CM Punk retained the Undisputed WWE Championship. But the chaos did not end there.

As Punk celebrated, Zayn attacked him with the belt. KO then recovered and went after Zayn, but Zayn hit him with the belt again. Zayn also attacked Punk one more time before taking the championship for himself.

He appeared completely out of control as he called the situation “justice” while standing above Punk and claimed the title belonged back with him.
