Queen Elizabeth’s final photo was taken just two days before she died on September 8, 2022. The 96-year-old queen stuck to her royal duties until the very end, and found a subtle yet touching way to include her late husband, Prince Philip.
Royal reporter Omid Scobie wrote about the queen’s final days in Endgame, which saw Elizabeth meeting with Liz Truss on September 6, 2022, to appoint her as prime minister following Boris Johnson’s resignation. It was the queen’s final official royal duty, one she insisted on carrying out shortly before her death.

In photos taken from that day, Elizabeth can be seen wearing a gray buttoned cardigan with a white shirt underneath, along with a traditional Scottish tartan skirt and tights. The queen held onto a cane that belonged to Philip, according to Scobie, who had died the year before.
“Her meeting with Truss was short, lasting a little under an hour, and the queen concluded it by allowing a photograph of the two to be released—the monarch with her walking stick in her hand (a dark wood favorite that once belonged to Prince Philip) and a room-lighting smile,” Scobie shared in the book.

Initially, the queen’s aides suggested that then-Prince Charles should conduct the event, because of the “crippling pain” she was in, but she “defiantly” refused the suggestion.

“Concerned courtiers suggested to the monarch that she might be better off letting Prince Charles carry out the task in her place,” Scobie wrote, per The Mirror. “After all, the heir had already stood in for his mother at the opening of Parliament four months earlier. But this was one duty the Queen—despite the crippling pain she was experiencing in private—would not step aside from. ‘It’s my job,’ she defiantly told aides.”
Philip and Elizabeth were married for 73 years, until he died on April 9, 2021.

Media photographer Jane Barlow snapped the final pictures, later telling the BBC that while the queen was “frail,” she seemed in “good spirits” and “very smiley” despite it being her final days.
“I’ve had so many lovely comments about the picture,” Barlow said of the photo, “It’s a real privilege to be able to take that picture, an honor and a privilege. It’s like that for a lot of our job.”
