Chappell Roan has some sound dating advice for Olivia Rodrigo.
On Thursday, Oct. 15, Roan and Rodrigo joined Apple Music’s Zane Lowe to discuss their new collaboration “expectations.” During the interview, the “Vampire” singer recalled their conversations in the studio.
“I have a vivid memory of being in the studio with you, Chappell, and we were trying to write the second verse and I was telling you all of the crazy stuff that boys have done to me,” Rodrigo, 23, began.
“You were like, ‘Oh my God, you need to start dating girls. This is crazy.’ It’s wild out here,” she continued.
Rodrigo and Roan dropped “expectations,” which is a remix of the version featured on her latest studio album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, on Thursday, Oct. 15. The pop stars also released an accompanying music video.
Speaking with Lowe, Rodrigo said she first wrote the song wanting to “write a mantra.”

“I felt lots of my songs were like, ‘This is how I feel, blah, blah, blah.’ But I wanted to be like, ‘I want to sing this song every night.’ It’s like Kendrick Lamar, ‘Sit down, be humble,’ it gets in your brain,” she explained.

“So when I made the song, honestly, I was really inspired by Chappell and the attitude and swagger that she had,” Rodrigo said, adding that it was a “dream come true” when the “Pink Pony Club” singer agreed to be a part of it.
For Roan, it was special to have queer representation in the verses.
“I don’t know if everyone would be down to have a fully queer verse on their song,” Roan said. “I think that that says a lot about your support for queerness, but also girl pop star vibes. It feels very feminist to me, but that is so you.”
The remix marks Roan’s first-ever feature — and her latest release since 2025’s “The Subway.” Rodrigo released you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, in June.
