Megan Moroney has heard her music in some pretty unexpected places, but one particular experience was a little more personal than most.

As part of Rolling Stone‘s Musicians on Musicians, the country star, 29, opened up about the “weirdest” place she’s heard one of her songs while chatting with Alex Warren, revealing that she once heard her music while getting laser hair removal on her entire body.

“I was getting laser hair removal on my entire body,” Moroney told the 26-year-old singer and YouTuber. “I was getting zapped in places you shouldn’t be zapped.”

As it turned out, the song she heard during the session was her 2023 single.

“‘I’m Not Pretty’... You just hear that, and I was like, ‘Okay,’” she said.

Warren, who released his own hit “Ordinary,” had an equally unexpected story to share. He recalled hearing the song while on Warren Street — an ironic location given his last name — when one of his friends was getting arrested.

“The cop in their car was playing ‘Ordinary,’ which was pretty rad,” he said.

Moroney loved the answer, but her own experience certainly made for a memorable story.

The singer has built a career on turning personal experiences into catchy, candid country hits. Her breakout single, “Tennessee Orange,” released in 2022, found Moroney singing about falling for a University of Tennessee fan despite her Georgia Bulldogs loyalties. The track ultimately became a five-time platinum hit.

Since then, Moroney has continued carving out her own lane with what she calls “emo cowgirl” music, pairing vulnerable lyrics about love and heartbreak with a playful, distinctly feminine aesthetic.

Her albums Lucky and Am I Okay? further cemented her place in country music, with the latter featuring the platinum-certified hit “Am I Okay?” and fan favorites that leaned into her signature mix of humor and heartache.

More recently, Moroney released Cloud 9. And after taking her music to audiences overseas, she’s ready for a change of pace.

“I have a few shows at the end of this year, just a few one-off things, no tour or anything,” she said. “But I’m really just trying to live life.”

Moroney is now taking some time away from the stage to find inspiration for her next album.

“I need to be able to have material for my next album,” Moroney explained. “So I’m really just trying to de-stimulate myself, go back into Meg-songwriter who is a lot more stripped down than Meg-arena.”

She even has a new nickname for her larger-than-life stage persona.

“Megarina,” she joked.

For now, the singer is happy to spend some time at home, away from the demands of arena shows.

“I’m just chilling, hanging out with my dog, all the things,” she said.

Moroney is currently on The Cloud 9 tour. It is scheduled to end on May 14, 2027, with a final performance at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Australia. Moroney and Warren are also set to make an appearance at Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians live event on Friday, Oct. 23.
