Kate Middleton was part of the welcoming party that greeted the Sultan of Oman on October 20 at Windsor Castle.

The state visit will include a glittery state banquet later in the evening, where the Princess of Wales is expected to don a tiara.

The future queen wore green—a nod to one of the colors on Oman’s flag—and a brooch that paid homage to both Princess Diana and Prince William.

As she helped welcome the Sultan of Oman to the U.K. for a state visit on October 20, Kate Middleton paid homage to her mother-in-law, Princess Diana, by wearing a brooch that has belonged to generations of women who have held the title of Princess of Wales.

Kate is, of course, the current Princess of Wales, wore the Queen Alexandra Three Feathers Brooch, which dates back to 1863. Tatler reported that it was gifted to Princess Alexandra of Denmark when she married the Prince of Wales, who would become King Edward VII.

The brooch depicts the ostrich feathers that make up the Prince of Wales’s heraldic badge, according to Tatler, and it is surrounded by diamonds and emeralds. It was given to Diana when she married Prince Charles—then the Prince of Wales—and after Kate took on the Princess of Wales title in 2022, she was given the brooch.

In wearing it, Kate honors not just Diana, but all women who held the Princess of Wales title who came before her—as well as Prince William, who carries the Prince of Wales title. The piece comes with a drop emerald, which Kate occasionally removes from the brooch when she wears it; Diana also removed or added the emerald to the brooch “depending on her outfit, wearing it as either a pendant or a brooch,” Tatler reported. Kate kept the drop emerald on, which matched perfectly with her green outfit.

In addition to her brooch, Kate wore a dark green Alexander McQueen coatdress as she joined King Charles, Queen Camilla, and William for the state visit welcome at Windsor Castle. The future queen previously wore the same coatdress in 2022 and 2025, according to Hello!.

She also wore a coordinating fascinator by Juliette Botterill, with the green ensemble honoring part of Oman’s flag. In a changeup from how it is traditionally done, Kate didn’t join William in greeting the Sultan, but later joined the other royals for the ceremonial welcome. Later in the evening, she is expected to don a tiara for a state banquet at Windsor Castle.

On Tuesday, Kate didn’t let the rain stop her from enjoying the ceremonial welcome, which took place after a carriage ride. The princess “smiled and gave a deep curtsy” and shook Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said’s hand. Per People, this state visit marks the first official visit of a Sultan of Oman to the U.K. since March 1982, coincidentally the same year that both William and Kate were born. The king welcomed the Sultan to tea at Windsor Castle during a private visit to the U.K. in July 2025.

“Charles is leading the way for them already, and [William and Kate] are both involved in decision-making behind the scenes,” a friend of Kate’s previously told People. “They are ready and willing to do the job—and Kate is very much a part of that.”
