It’s been 25 years since Kate Hudson received her first Academy Award nomination. In 2001, she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress following her breakthrough performance in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous. This year, Hudson is up for Best Actress for another musically inspired film, Song Sung Blue. She arrived at the Dolby Theater on Sunday in a jade green, custom ornately embellished Giorgio Armani Privé bustier gown with a plunging sweetheart neckline and peplum waist from the Spring/Summer 2026 runway collection. Hudson upped the sparkles with 41 carats of rare green diamonds worth $35 million from Italian jeweler Garatti.

Hudson told NPR in February she got the part in Song Sung Blue after co-star Hugh Jackman, who had already signed onto the project, saw her singing and discussing music during an appearance on CBS Sunday Morning. After reading the script, Hudson said she quickly decided she wanted to be part of the project.

"When you read a lot of scripts, and you read the types of characters that are written for women, very rarely do you see ones that hit all the notes," she said during an episode of Fresh Air. "I got to play the comedy, some sense of humor. I got to play the love story, the desire. I got to play being a mother, and then I got to go into a place of where my life force is taken out of me."

Based on the true story and dramatizing events from a 2008 documentary of the same name, Song Sung Blue follows a Milwaukee couple who performed as the popular Neil Diamond tribute band "Lightning & Thunder" from the late 1980s until 2006. Hudson and Jackman play Claire and Mike Sardina, who overcome a number of personal hardships throughout the film, including Claire's leg amputation following a freak accident, her subsequent depression, and Mike's struggles as a Vietnam veteran and recovering alcoholic.

“I feel like I met her in my mind. I watched that documentary so much, I felt like I knew her intimately, and I was very emotional when she came to set,” Hudson told IndieWire of finally meeting the real Claire. “I’m sitting there with my hair, and she has her hair, and I’ve got my [prosthetic] leg on at times, and she has her real one,” she said with a laugh. “I think it must have felt like a bit out of body for her, because I don’t think a thing like this was ever something that she would’ve thought would’ve happened in her life. She was just the best and everybody came out and cheered for her when she came on set. She was just so happy.”
