For Scrubs fans, there has remained one constant throughout nearly every season of the show: Are JD (Zach Braff) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) together? With the show finally returning, the question has a new answer. And let's just say, much like the history of their relationship, the answer is a bit complicated.

At the end of Season 8, Elliot and JD had moved in together. In "My Finale," the original series finale of the hit comedy, JD sees a montage of his imagined future where he gets married to Elliot and they have a child together. By Season 9, those dreams are a reality. As JD returns to Sacred Heart to teach, Elliot sends him off to work while pregnant.

But the show has decided that the events of Season 9 are no longer canon. As the premiere episode of the revival, which aired tonight on ABC, revealed, JD and Elliot had indeed gotten married, but subsequently divorced."Yeah, I guess that is ret-conned," Braff told Parade in an exclusive interview.

"I think it was a great choice," added Chalke. "Where do you go from there if everything is happy and working out? The suspense of where it's going to go from there was a way better jumping-off point. Even within the first season, there's a lot of things that happen with them."

While it looked like JD and Elliot had this perfect life together, Braff wants to remind fans to reset their expectations. "Fans need to be reminded that all those things that happened at the end of Season 8 that are projected onto the sheet that JD is looking at are what he daydreams will happen," he said in reference to the montage that played in "My Finale".

The decision may surprise fans who took comfort in JD and Elliott’s apparent happy ending, but it doesn’t erase it. Instead, the revival treats that future as one possible version of events, not a promise. Their relationship still matters deeply, and their dynamic is very much a part of the new show.

What is unshakable, however, is the heart of the show. The JD–Turk bond remains central, something the cast was quick to confirm. “The bromance is alive,” Braff said, with Faison adding that it’s “stronger than ever.”

So are JD and Elliott still together? Not exactly, but their story isn’t over. The revival isn’t about undoing what fans loved. It’s about revisiting these characters with honesty, humor, and the understanding that life rarely unfolds exactly the way you imagined it would.
