Hunter Schafer revealed she got gender-affirming bottom surgery in a new cover story for Elle

The actress told the outlet that she “really wanted to try to make that previous body work”

The Euphoria star has long been open about her experiences as a transgender woman

Hunter Schafer is opening up about a gender-affirming procedure.

In her Elle cover story published on Monday, Oct. 19, the actress, 27, revealed that she underwent bottom surgery at the end of last year. “Maybe it’s a good thing to share, for the tension I was talking about between those two worlds [reality and ideology],” she told the outlet. “I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much.”

Bottom surgery refers to a range of procedures that modify the genital and reproductive anatomy to align with a person’s gender identity.

The Euphoria star explained that while she had tried to embrace the body she had, she ultimately decided that prodecure was the right move for her. “Like I said, for a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself, and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it,” she told the outlet.

She also described renting a big apartment for her to recover in early this year. “I think my limit was 150 steps per day, which is nothing,” Schafer said of being forced to slow down.

The actress and model has long been outspoken about her experiences as a transgender woman.

In 2025, she said that for the first time, her passport read male instead of female, following President Donald Trump‘s executive order, which declared that the United States would “recognize two sexes, male and female,” and “these sexes are not changeable.”

Schafer detailed the “harsh realities” of getting a new passport after hers was stolen in a candid TikTok video uploaded in February.

Schafer said in her video that the Bureau of Consular Affairs had frozen passport applications and renewals that include a request for a sex other than the one assigned at birth to be listed. “When [my passport] was picked up today and I opened it up, they had changed the marker to male,” she said. “I was shocked. I just didn’t think it was actually going to happen.”

Schafer “acknowledge[d]” her “privilege” as a White, celebrity trans woman, pointing out that the gender marker change “still happened” to her.

“I don’t know exactly what changed as far as the processing goes,” she continued. “This is the first time this has happened to me since I changed my gender marker, we’re coming up on a decade now. I do believe it is a direct result of the administration our country is currently operating under.”

“I don’t give a f--k that they put an M on my passport,” Schafer later added. “It doesn’t change anything about me or my transness. However, it does make life a little harder.”
