- Eric André stars alongside John Cena in the Netflix comedy *Little Brother.*
- The comedian admits he didn't always make it easy for director Matt Spicer behind the scenes.
- André describes one scene in particular that made Spicer "pull his hair out."
Eric André is not known for quiet, restrained performances.
As John Cena, his costar in Netflixâs *Little Brother, *puts it in an interview with **, heâs a âhuman tornado of comedy.â Sitting alongside Cena for the chat, AndrĂ© admits he didnât always make things easy for director Matt Spicer behind the scenes of the new buddy comedy (now streaming).
Asked about his favorite experience on the set, AndrĂ© says, âI think for me, it was making Matt lose a year of his life and grow more gray hairs. He just came in as we were doing press, and I was like, those [gray hairs] are mine. Those are all from me. That little gray in the mustache? That's from me.â
In the scripted Netflix comedy, AndrĂ© plays Marcus, a lovable oddball who, after checking out of a psychiatric hospital, inserts himself into the life of John Cenaâs Rudd, a high-strung realtor who, decades earlier, befriended Marcus while volunteering with a youth mentoring program. Though Rudd has no memory of Marcus, they reconnect when Marcus gets in a car accident and lists his âbig brotherâ as his emergency contact.

One of AndrĂ©âs favorite days on set came while shooting a scene in which Marcus, now living in Ruddâs home, has sex in the driveway as two elderly neighbors watch from their window.
âAnd, um, they're not upset â they're kind of turned on,â AndrĂ© explains. âAnd when you have an elderly couple on set saying raunchy and lascivious dialogue as a comedic writer, you get very excited.â
So, after filming his portion of the scene, AndrĂ© says he ran up the stairs of the neighborâs house to speak with the actors playing the older couple.

âI juked past the very talented director, Matt Spicer, which he wasn't thrilled about,â AndrĂ© says with a laugh. âAnd I merely suggested more alts for the elderly couple to say lewd and lascivious dialogue to make it into the blooper reel.â
He adds that he and comedian Derrick Beckles âwere making Matt pull his hair out that night because we just could not help ourselves. He's like, âGuys, I gotta just get them to say their lines the right way.â And we were like, âThey're saying poop and pee!ââ
âWe were already pressed for time,â Spicer tells EW in a separate interview. âAnd then, of course, Eric is like, âWait, wait, wait, I've got some ideas.â So he runs up, and I think the [assistant director] saw this and was like, âOh God, what's happening?â And Eric starts feeding lines to the couple, just the most absurd, disgusting stuff that you can imagine â and to their credit, they were both totally game.â

On most sets, a moment like this would stick out for a director. But for Spicer, it was just another day working with AndrĂ©. âIt's funny, that day didn't necessarily stand out to me,â he says. âI feel like there were a lot of days that ended like that, where we just wanted to keep going and doing bits or doing alternate lines. Eric's a machine. I had to be the teacher that was like, âAll right, guys, time to wrap it up. We gotta go home and shoot one tomorrow.ââ
The filmmaker also insists AndrĂ© shouldnât give himself too much credit for those gray hairs. âMy dad was fully gray by the time he was my age, so that Iâve held onto as much pigment as I have, I think, is a good thing,â he jokes. âBut no, I mean, any film is just a massive undertaking. It's not even personal to Eric.â
He adds, âWe had a great cast, and Eric is lovely to work with. Heâs a really, really sweet guy and very talented and funny and all that stuff. So, none of that came from him at all.â
Echoing Spicer, Cena says what surprised him most about AndrĂ© wasnât his comedy, but the pathos he brought to the role. âWe worked together through a lot of the chaos, and manâŠit's the heart, it's wanting to root for Eric's character, that makes the movie impactful.â
