Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss the rest of the 2026-2027 NFL season due to blood clots in his lungs.
On Monday morning, Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn, released a statement saying that doctors found multiple blood clots in the Super Bowl champion's lungs.
“Over the last few days, Jalen Hurts has received comprehensive medical evaluations by physician experts. In the interest of transparency, we are providing additional information on the diagnosis and treatment plan related to his condition,” the Eagles and Lynn said in a statement.
“Jalen was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis. After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli," the statement continued. "He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. His treatment should only involve anticoagulation (i.e. “blood thinners”). During this time, he will not be allowed to participate in any contact activities, including football."
According to the Cleveland Clinic, "Superficial thrombophlebitis, or superficial vein thrombosis, is a blood clot that occurs in veins under the skin (superficial veins)."
Bilateral pulmonary emboli are blood clots that block and stop blood flow to an artery in the lung, the Mayo Clinic states.
Hurts was placed on injured reserve Saturday, two days after the Eagles revealed he has a blood clot in his calf. He missed the first of at least four games in Philadelphia's loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
The Eagles said Hurts was injured when he took a cleat to his calf area on Oct. 4 in a game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Hurts informed the medical staff of the injury after practice on Oct. 8. The Super Bowl LVII MVP was back at practice the next day before the team left for London to play Jacksonville. Hurts was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis.

Lynn said that Hurts' "prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery." He's expected to return to the field once he's off blood thinners.
"In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects," the statement said. “We are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery."
Hurts hadn’t missed more than two games in a season since becoming the full-time starter in 2021. He has led the Eagles to five straight playoff appearances, three NFC East titles and two Super Bowl appearances, beating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 two years ago.
Amid the announcement, Netflix's Tom Pelissero tweeted that when Hurts was diagnosed with the superficial clot in London, doctors advised him not to sleep, so he'd been awake for 36 hours before the team faced the Jaguars on Oct. 11.
However, he later clarified this after talking with Lynn. She told him that "Hurts was up until early Sunday morning getting evaluated at a hospital" and "he was able to sleep upon rejoining the team and the Eagles set aside a room for him at the stadium."
"Videos from the stadium show Hurts coming onto the field just before kickoff and he felt rested enough to play," Pelissero continued.
Tanner McKee started for Hurts against the Panthers. He finished 26 of 45 for 215 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles’ fourth straight loss, 25-14 to the Panthers.
The Eagles (2-4) have lost four consecutive games for the first time since 2020.
