The 2019 reboot added accessibility features and led to the musical film Blue’s Big City Adventure

Long before Bluey rose to fame, a different blue dog was running preschool television.

On Sept. 8, 1996, an animated, mystery-solving blue dog named Blue burst onto the scene as the star of Nick Jr.’s Blue’s Clues, alongside his owner and best friend, Steve (portrayed by Steve Burns). Together, the pair would go around the house looking for clues that pointed to what Blue, who communicated by barking and leaving paw prints on different items, wanted to play, do, or eat that day.

Throughout the episode, Steve, along with the young viewers, would play mini-games that encouraged viewers to use their problem-solving, math, science or reading skills. Each clue collected would eventually serve as the basis behind the episode’s riddle. Near the end of the episode, Steve would head to the Thinking Chair and ask the audience for help connecting the three clues to solve the puzzle.

Burns, who started on Nickelodeon’s hit show at 22 years old, led the series as the titular character for the first four seasons, between 1996 and 2002. The children’s program shot to immediate success and reached No. 1 shortly after airing.

However, in 2000, Burns abruptly left the show when his character went to college. He then passed the role down to his younger brother, Joe, played by Donovan Patton, after a multi-episode transition arc. Patton took over the Handy Dandy Notebook that Steve used to draw clues for the next two seasons before the show ultimately came to a natural conclusion at the end of season 6.

Then, 13 years later, Nickelodeon executives decided to try to capture the hearts and minds of young children by rebooting the series. Joshua Dela Cruz, who portrayed Steve and Joe’s younger cousin, took over the main role, serving as the host throughout the show’s tenure.

For 90 episodes, Josh and his best friend Blue recreated the magic in Blue’s Clues & You. The series, which ran from 2019 to 2024 for five seasons, modernized the popular show and was built around a preschool-level curriculum. While it continued to follow the same format of the original series, the reboot added new accessibility and inclusivity features into the programming.

The revival of the popular children’s series became just as successful as the original, setting the stage for the character’s first feature film, titled Blue’s Big City Adventure.

The live-action and animated musical comedy film saw the return of both Steve and Joe as they worked to track down Blue and Josh, who got lost in New York City after Josh left behind his Handy Dandy Notebook. Throughout the movie, the crew plays an extended game of Blue’s Clues to help Josh find his way to his big audition for a Broadway musical.

Thirty years later, Blue’s Clues is still a household staple. Many former viewers of the show can look back and remember the first time they helped the friendly blue dog and his owner with a clue.

As for the former hosts, working on the hit show created a strong bond for them. “We really are friends. We actually do see each other socially. And we would be friends even if we weren’t on the show, I think, if we met,” Burns told PEOPLE back in 2022.

Though Dela Cruz was the last to join the Blue’s Clues family after being cast in the 2019 revival Blue’s Clues & You!, he fit in with Burns and Patton from the start.

“Steve ambushed me at my audition,” Dela Cruz revealed. “He emerged from the curtains, and I was like, ‘Hey, Steve.’ What I loved about that interaction was that as soon as he opened his mouth, I felt calm, I felt like I belonged there, and I felt taken seriously.”

“Then getting to know Steve and Donovan on a personal level beyond that was so freaking cool, because we are cut from the same cloth,” he added. “We’re cousins on the show, and it’s like a family reunion every time we get together, but the family that you love to see.”
